Thailand’s Minister of Tourism, Surawong, indicated that travel to his country is safe and that the country’s tourist destinations were not damaged in the wake of the devastating earthquake in the region. He confirmed that no tourists were injured and no tourist attractions were affected.
The minister said, “Travel, hotels, and events are operating normally. Inspections are ongoing to ensure safety. The tourist police are monitoring key sites. There are no flight cancellations,” according to Al Arabiya.
Airport terminals and runways had previously been inspected to ensure there was no damage.
Tourism accounts for 12% of Thailand’s GDP and employs more than 20% of the total workforce, according to a speech delivered by the country’s central bank governor last year.
A powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar has so far killed 17 people in Bangkok.
Authorities said at least 83 people were still missing, adding that 32 others were injured.
